Cleaning Out the Clutter! Posted: September 26th, 2016 For the past few months we have very been busy cleaning out the clutter in our house! It's amazing how much stuff you can accumulate over the years, geez! So we've been going through closets, drawers, you name it...to simply clean out the clutter and actually enjoy the space we live in.
The kids bedrooms were first on the de-cluttering list. The closets were overflowing and I knew it would only get worse with Birthdays & Christmas right around the corner. Before we started I told my kids that it was their decision what they wanted to keep and what they wanted to let go. I know many parents clean out their child's unwanted items when they are not around, but I always use our cleaning out as a life lesson. "You must be willing to let go, before you get more." It's a tough phrase that most adults can't handle, but both of my girls were able to let go of 4 to 5 bags full of toys and clothes they no longer used or wanted.
Then it was on to the master bedroom, bathrooms, laundry room and kitchen. Every single thing was pulled out of drawers, closets and cabinets. The only items we kept were items we used most often. All items were put back more organized.
While I had a few donation boxes filled for the thrift store, I also had a few boxes of items I knew I could consign at my local consignment shop. I've been bringing items to this shop for over 15 years. It's a nice way of making money without having to organize a garage sale. I actually just stopped in last week and had over $230 in my account from items we brought in the last few months.
Now that everything is organized and clutter free I am able to watch for sales or clearance deals on the items that might need to be updated, like kitchen utensils and towels.
Although, we are still cleaning out, it becomes quite addicting when you start the journey, having less clutter in the house has been such a great feeling. Cleaning & finding what we need (even when we are pressed for time) seems so much easier! I am no longer trying to squeeze another pair of shoes into the mudroom shoe cubby and I can actually open closet doors without the fear of something falling out!
We have already started the 2016-2017 school year and having less in the house has been just wonderful!
